Can't wait for Cosmos II

Was going through a box in the closet and found this great Carl Sagan cover and made me remember what a wonderful job the first Cosmos series did at opening up science to general audiences. It wasn't just science that Sagan and those around him opened up to a wider audience, it was philosophy and politics too. That how we fund research and science matters just as much as how we fund other parts of government.

Future Life was a magazine that lasted only about four years (1978-1981). It was dedicated to both science and science fiction. This cover of Future Life has a headline that reads, "Space Activism: A Growing National Movement?" They talk about the forming and constantly growing 'space constituency'. These are activists that want to influence government and society in a direction that takes us further into the stars.

These groups continued and did not simply just 'go away' as I am sure some in the various power circles in our country would have preferred. Even President Obama had a group of these folks in the 2008 campaign. The Obamanauts worked for his election in Florida and other parts of the country.

Creative Writing: Close Quarters

The big city promises big dreams and even bigger disappointments for fools of all fortunes. This is just one of the thousands of stories from within the city limits....

Water hitting the pavement again. Peter rolled over in his bed to look at his alarm clock. three in the morning, three the damn morning he thought to himself. Tossing himself face up; he began to stare at the ceiling. The sound of the water grew louder and louder until he forced himself to get out of bed. Lumbering towards the bedroom window he exerted what little strength he had left in him to open it to the outside world. Leaning against the windowsill; he started taking in all that he saw. The few faint stars, the cityscape and then the eyesore before him; the big city water truck.

"I say; do you mind not running that aquatic monstrosity this early in the morning? Some of us are just getting into bed at this time" he attempted to yell over the sound of the water shooting from the pressure washer.

No response.
